What is SRSI?

Hosted by the University at Buffalo (UB) and a diverse group of partners, the Shale Resources and Society Institute (SRSI) is an independent, non-partisan, non-lobbying group aimed at objectively analyzing the development and societal impact of shale and other unconventional resources. SRSI focuses on balanced, fact-based research that can have global reach and impact — far beyond its host state of New York. To foster collaboration among SRSI’s multidisciplinary research team, the Institute is focusing on four core areas:

  • Rocks, fractures, fluids, and migration
  • Groundwater and surface environmental impacts
  • Societal impacts
  • Policy and regulation

By bringing together expertise and innovative ideas from universities and colleges, environmental organizations, community groups, governmental entities, utility companies, corporations, and end users, SRSI is the first truly comprehensive center to focus on all aspects of this transformational resource.
